Many wondered how France would cope without Karim Benzema at this World Cup. On the evidence so far, they are coping perfectly fine.

Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann have been two big reasons behind Les Bleus’ success in Qatar, but Kylian MbappĂ© is shouldering the majority of his nations hopes at the tournament at the moment.

Mbappé is still only 23 yet we have become so accustomed to his level of footballing maturity and he lives up to the hype around him time and time again.

His two goals in this match took his tally to eight at the World Cup, which is an especially impressive figure when you remember he only made his debut at the tournament in 2018.

He has now moved above Thierry Henry on World Cup goals scored for France, and level with Zinedine Zidane on France’s all-time top scorers list. Two huge, iconic names, yet MbappĂ© undoubtedly belongs among them.

His goals against Denmark were both well taken, with the winner he scored with his thigh a reminder that it doesn’t matter how they go in, as long as they go in.

France have arguably been the strongest team at the World Cup so far and it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see them retain their crown this year.

Which means MbappĂ© could soon be a two-time World Cup winner at the age of just 23. That’s the stuff of legend.
