Before tonight only three men had ever scored a World Cup goal for Wales.

Terry Medwin, Ivor Allchurch and John Charles were joined tonight by Gareth Bale in the annuls of Welsh football history.

But the former Real Madrid man wasn’t our Man of the Match.

No, that award goes to Kieffer Moore for his stunning second half performance that quite literally turned the game around for Rob Page’s side.

Having been a regular fixture in the Wales starting XI over the past 12 months and having scored four in the Premier League in recent weeks, Moore seemed a shoo-in for a start here against the USA.

As it was though, coach Page went instead with Harry Wilson in midfield in a move that backfired almost immediately.

Without a focal point in attack, Wales were aimless in the first half and looked totally overawed by this historic occasion.

Page though, to his credit, realised the mistake and brought Moore on right before the start of the second half and watched as Cymru’s entire attacking structure changed.

The Bournemouth striker was a menace to the US back four, holding up play superbly, flicking on for his team mates and allowing Bale the space in between the lines that he loves.

It truly was a masterclass in being a target man.

Unfortunately the goal that his play deserved didn’t materialise but we can be rest assured that Moore won’t be spending any more time on the bench at this World Cup.
