SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica CS Herediano and FC Motagua tied 1-1 in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Wednesday at Estadio Nacional in San José, Costa Rica.

Andy Rojas had the first promising look for Herediano in the 19’, but his attempt from outside the box was wide above the crossbar.

Román Castillo converted from the penalty spot in the 29’ to open the scoring and give Motagua the lead.

John Jairo Ruiz leveled the scoring for the hosts in the 54’ through a powerful long-range strike.

Yendrick Ruiz was close to finding a late winner for Herediano in 90’+8, but his header was just wide of the near post.

With the draw, Herediano concludes the group stage as the leader. The Costa Rican side topped Group A with 10 points and an unbeaten record of three wins and a draw.

Motagua climbed to second place in the group with the point to become the fifth team to confirm a spot in the knockout round. The Honduran side finished the group stage with seven points.

Cacique Diriangén FC, who finished its campaign in the previous match week, exits the competition after falling to third place because of Wednesday’s encounters. The Nicaraguan side also accumulated seven points but was bested by Motagua on goal difference.
