Most tackles, most passes and 7/11 duels – this player shines even when Chelsea struggle

Chelsea’s performance and result today against Brentford were poor. A 0-0 draw with not nearly enough created. The team as a whole were bad, and there were several individuals deserving of criticism too.

But there’s one player who simply can’t put a foot wrong at the moment – Moises Caicedo.

He was immense in midweek and got praise from all over for his superb showing against Spurs.

While the team around him weren’t as good today, he kept his levels insanely high.

He had the most completed passes of anyone on the pitch with 55. He made 3 tackles, also the most of anyone in the game. Add to that 2 recoveries, 3 clearances and 7/11 duels won and you’ve got a monster defensive showing on your hands.

But he wasn’t all defensive – as always he did his part going forward. He made 3 key passes, and 9 passes into the final third. WhoScored ended up giving him a 7.6/10 rating, third highest of any outfield player.

His stats for the season are just ridiculous at this point.

Caicedo does his part – teammates let him down

If he didn’t already, Caicedo has now got the player of the year award sewn up. Now we just need the team around him to raise their game to his level. The defence did pretty well today, and Robert Sanchez even stepped up with some big saves.

But the attack was pretty dire – a front 4 of Christopher Nkunku, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke was totally uninspiring, and it was no surprise to see changes at half time and shortly after. We’ve got to find this balance better – either we can’t score or we can’t keep clean sheets. It’s never going to be easy, but after almost a full season of Maresca in charge we’d be lying if we didn’t say we wanted more.
