Ryan Mason believes Harry Kane should win the Premier League Player of the Season award

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur caretaker manager Ryan Mason has backed superstar striker Harry Kane to win the Premier League Player of the Season award.

The English skipper has been a consistent performer for Spurs over the past few seasons. He currently leads the league in both goals scored and assists in what is at a personal level, an impressive campaign.

The same cannot be said of Tottenham who have failed to build upon a solid start to the season. The North Londoners are set to end another campaign without a trophy and could also miss out on European football if results go against them.

“Harry has been the most influential player in the Premier League this season. He’s got the joint-most goals, most assists. If the prize is who is the best player in the Premier League, then Harry has to be in the conversation.”

Manchester City’s Ruben Dias is the favourite to win this season’s award. The centre-back has been instrumental as the Citizens retained their Premier League crown while also winning the Carabao Cup. While the Portuguese star’s impact cannot be dismissed, Kane’s numbers must not be overlooked because his side failed to reflect the same level of success.

“The trophy isn’t for the team of the league, it’s for the player of the league.”

Historical precedents!

Mason has made a claim for his striker, claiming how in the past players who had not won the league went on to win the player of the year award. One does not have to look far for it. Kevin De Bruyne did the same last season while Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah achieved the same the previous two seasons.

“I wasn’t aware Harry wouldn’t be in that conversation because, in previous seasons, players have won without winning the league.”

It is pretty surprising that despite the numbers he has put up in recent years, he is yet to win a player of the season award. Having not only continued his goalscoring streak, Kane has also improved upon his creativity and assists. It would be unfair if he does not make the conversation for the yearly gong.

Brazilian midfielder Juninho won the award in 1996/97 despite Middlesborough getting relegated. The last Spurs star to win the award was Gareth Bale in 2013. Tottenham finished fifth that season.
