Police have confirmed Morocco and Schalke midfielder Amine Harit has been involved in a fatal car accident resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man.

Less than a week after leaving the World Cup, Harit was reportedly driving with his 14-year-old brother when the car struck the unnamed pedestrian.

There had been reports that Harit’s brother was behind the wheel but they have since been denied by Moroccan police.

Harit, voted Bundesliga Rookie of the Year for the 2017/18 season, made one appearance at the World Cup before Morocco exited at the end of the group stage.

In a statement released to Bild, Schalke said:

“Dear colleagues, this morning we have also registered the media reports that have the message from press portals registered that Amine Harit seems to have been involved in a car accident in Marrkech, Morocco. Since then, we have been working hard to obtain reliable first-hand information about the incident. Once we have that, we will comment. Until then, we ask for your understanding that we are currently unable to answer media inquiries.”
