Remember when Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was bleating about officials sticking to the rulebook before his team faced Everton last season?

That undoubtedly would have been handy yesterday when Reds midfielder Fabinho put Brighton & Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson out of the game with a horrific tackle.

Quite how the officials decided the challenge was not worth a red card is anyone’s guess – the tackle bordered on grievous bodily harm.

Disgraceful tackles aside, Liverpool deservedly exited the Amex Stadium with their interest in yet another competition ended at an early stage.

Klopp’s side are like Manchester United last season but without the same excuses to fall back on. The Reds manager is increasingly looking like a busted flush.

Wrexham’s resurgence under Hollywood duo is magical

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds says he was ‘moved’ by the team’s performance against Sheffield United in the FA Cup fourth round yesterday.

The National League club were unfortunate not to win the game, with John Egan’s goal in stoppage time setting up a replay at Bramall Lane.

Under the ownership of Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the North Wales outfit are in the midst of a resurgence that has ignited the local community.

The way they have bought into what Wrexham means to the fans is a lesson for anyone thinking of buying a football club.

Promotion back to the Football League is the primary aim for the North Wales outfit, but it would be no surprise if they gave the Blades another scare in the replay.

What to watch this week

It’s the last day of the transfer window tomorrow, and several clubs at the bottom of the Premier League desperately need to sign some new players.

This unquestionably includes Everton, whose new manager Sean Dyche does not have much time to get some deals over the line.

Given the current state of their squad, the odds of 4/6 on offer to be relegated still looks pretty generous.
