Plymouth Argyle knocked Ipswich Town off of top spot in League One with a statement 2-1 victory at Home Park on Sunday.

The Pilgrims, particularly on their home patch, have been brilliant at the start of this season, bouncing back from their disappointing end to the 2021/22 campaign.

Former Argyle striker Freddie Ladapo gave the visitors a first half lead after his shot took a helpful deflection off of Dan Scarr, but the hosts turned the match on its head in the second half.

Bali Mumba emphatically equalised in the 69th minute, setting up a grandstand finish in a top of the table clash.

Morgan Whittaker had been knocking on the door for a while in the second period, and the Swansea City loanee found the corner with a powerful left footed strike that took a flick off of Lee Evans on its way in.

“What a shift from the lads.”

Portsmouth did not play at the weekend due to international fixtures and that handed Argyle the opportunity to climb to the summit on Sunday lunchtime.

In what season were Plymouth Argyle founded?

1885 1886 1888 1890

The manner of the victory, in coming from behind against a team heavily fancied for automatic promotion has to fuel belief within the group and in the supporter base.

It would have been tough for some Argyle supporters to forget about their 5-0 drubbing at home to Milton Keynes Dons on the final day of last term, that saw them miss out on the top six, but the home faithful will now be fully on board with Steven Schumacher’s promotion push.

Whittaker has demonstrated his class in patches over the last few years at Derby County, Swansea City and Lincoln City, and Argyle feels like a good fit at this stage of his career, to show what he is capable of before playing in the Championship with regularity next season.
