Morgan Gibbs-White says he is “delighted” to sign a new contract with Nottingham Forest, ending any chance of a transfer to Spurs this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur apparently activated the player’s £60 million release clause earlier this month, but were threatened with legal action by Forest.
The Tricky Trees believe Spurs made an illegal approach for Gibbs-White, who moved to the City Ground from Wolves in a £42.5m deal in 2022, as they were not granted permission to speak with the midfielder. Manchester City approached the Midlands outfit about a possible deal earlier in the window.
Speculation surrounding the England international’s future has been put to bed now, though, after he signed what the club called a “record deal” until 2028.
“I’m delighted,” Gibbs-White said following Saturday evening’s 3-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Premier League rivals Fulham.
“Thank you to Mr Marinakis for believing in me. I feel like we’ve been on a rollercoaster of a journey, but I’ve felt the love from the very first moment I stepped through the doors.
“We’ve had difficult times, but we’ve had a lot of highs. And last year was really, really exciting.
“We got to showcase what we’re about and what we’re trying to build as a team. And I feel Mr Marinakis is at the base of that. So yeah, I was delighted to sign.”
Gibbs-White added: “The manager’s been incredible since he’s come in. And the fans as well, the fans have been absolutely amazing from the very first moment I joined.
“To give them back European football, it’s something that we as a dressing room, as a team, as a club are really proud about, because they’re the ones that deserve it the most. They’re the ones that pay their hard-earned money and show up on the weekends and support up. We’re just happy to give back to them.”
