Prior to the final round of matches, Karlsruher SC (1-0 win at Rasenballsport Leipzig) top the table with 19 points. BVB, in second place with 16 points (goal difference +6), are level on points with Leipzig (goal difference +4), followed by Mainz (14 points/+2). The Black & Yellows will travel to bottom club Unterhaching, against whom they suffered a 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture, in their final match of the main round. Mainz are up against Leipzig. "We now have everything in our own hands, but we have of course been warned," explained U19 coach Mike Tullberg.

BVB laid on a footballing spectacle in the first half against Mainz at Stadion Rote Erde. The floodgates were opened by Mathis Albert, who curled a stunning effort into the top corner from 18 metres (6). Nick Cherny upped the lead to 2-0 on 19 minutes, after Mainz shot-stopper Mehmet Öczelik had spilled the ball following a shot from Mussa Kaba. Taycan Etcibasi then made it 3-0 after Ousmane Diallo had won the ball back (22). Borussia put the visitors under pressure with high and aggressive pressing and went on to create more gilt-edge chances before the break.

The Black & Yellows continued to dominate the game after the interval: Diallo increased the lead to 4-0 following a pass from Etcibasi (51). Mainz then managed to grab a consolation goal when former Dortmund player Raul König slotted home from the penalty spot. But Mussa Kaba re-established the four-goal cushion in the 81st minute. "I'm happy with the performance and the attitude from the boys. The team did a great job, put in a top performance and scored some great goals," said Tullberg, who had included a debutant in the starting line-up in Valon Cena and had named an almost completely new back four in defence that hardly allowed their opponents any chances.

The U19s are next in action in the Westfalenpokal on Wednesday (18:00 CEST). Arminia Bielefeld will be the opponents on pitch 8 at the Youth Performance Centre.

U17s facing two important home games after 1-1 draw

The Borussia U17s had to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Union Berlin in main round group A of the DFB-Nachwuchsliga. Karsten Gorges' team are now facing two important home matches against 1. FC Magdeburg (18:00 CEST on Wednesday) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (11:00 CEST on Saturday).

"That was a big challenge for the boys at the end of the first English week. Union played a very intense game, were quicker to act at times and were more aggressive in the challenges," said Gorges in summary. BVB, who were without the injured Jan-Luca Riedl and Fadi Zarqelain, did not settle into their usual link-up play on the dry and hard pitch at the Stadion an der Wuhlheide and made some uncharacteristic technical errors. Dortmund's opening goal by Miguel Adje (36) was cancelled out by the Berlin outfit just shy of the hour mark (Yann Megaptche).

"We have to draw the right conclusions from this game and recover well in order to win against Magdeburg on Wednesday and to then have a final game against Mönchengladbach to decide first place," explained Gorges. Gladbach won the top match against Wolfsburg by a 3-1 scoreline and are in third place in the table with 12 points from six games, behind Wolfsburg (15/8) and BVB (12/7). 1. FC Magdeburg are in fourth spot (9/7).

U17s: Wehrbein – Kolano, (König, 61), Driedger, Ritter, Adje (Branco, 61) – Fahrenhorst, Damberg – Duarte dos Santos (Kusi, 62), Faust (Perri, 68) – Mirza (Mize, 79), Najdi (Heavens, 79)
