Benfica’s young goalkeeper Mile Svilar might have thought it was going to be his night when he saved an early Anthony Martial penalty at Old Trafford on Tuesday, but Lady Luck had other ideas.
The 18-year-old’s error gifted Manchester United a goal in Lisbon two weeks ago and it was another own goal from him which gave the Red Devils the lead on the stroke of half-time in the return fixture.
Nemanja Matić’s long range strike cannoned back off the post and into the net off Svilar’s back.
Daley Blind put the hosts 2-0 up with a second half penalty to move José Mourinho’s men one step closer to the last 16.
Pointless Benfica, on the other hand, are heading out of the competition.
