After stunning leaders Napoli 1-0 on Wednesday, another three points for Inter would have kept them well in the hunt for the Serie A title.

And Simone Inzaghi’s side subsequently looked to get off to a lightning-quick start against Monza as Matteo Darmian opened the scoring within 10 minutes.

However, the hosts proved to be a tough opponent and equalised within seconds when Patrick Ciurria picked out a corner and beat goalkeeper André Onana for 1-1.

Eventually, it would take some flair from World Cup winner Lautaro Martínez to help Inter.

The Argentina striker remained alert in the box and pressured a slow-to-move goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, stripped him of the ball and nestled it into the net for 2-1.

Coming out into the second half, the visitors stepped off the gas a bit, and both sides struggled to find the target with only seven shots on goal combined.

But Inter seemed to assume the game had wrapped up early and allowed Luca Caldirola to score in the 93rd minute for 2-2.

Despite the dropped points, a positive boost for Inter was seeing Romelu Lukaku come off the bench.

The result is now a significant blow for Inzaghi’s men in terms of the title race. Looking at the table, Inter are fourth, two points behind Milan (who play Sunday), three off second-place Juventus and leaders Napoli are ahead by seven.
