Montpellier inflicted fourth-placed Monaco a 4-0 humbling on Sunday, in what could prove to be a devastating blow in the Monégasques‘ European hopes. A brace from Arnaud Nordin and goals courtesy of Faitout Maoussa and English striker Stephy Mavididi provided the goods for the visitors. A relegation-battling side during the first part of the season, La Paillade are a completely different side following the re-appointment of Michel Der Zakarian, who had first managed the team from 2017 to 2021.
With a 43-point tally, Montpellier are now safe from relegation, and their display at Stade Louis-II were testament to their newly-found confidence. “The content of the match was very, very good. Not everyone can beat Monaco 4-0“, beamed Der Zakarian to L’Equipe. Montpellier have moved up to twelfth place in the Ligue 1 standings and Der Zakarian has urged his players to aim even higher. “It’s up to us to pick up points. We must have the ambition to go for the teams ahead of us.”
Montpellier will travel to 7th-placed Lyon for Ligue 1 gameweek 34 next Sunday.
