Montpellier supporters sentenced for throwing firecracker at Clermont’s goalkeeper | OneFootball

The two Montpellier HSC supporters who were accused of throwing firecrackers at Clermont Foot’s Mory Diaw (30) have been sentenced by the Montpellier Criminal Court.

According to RMC Sport, one of the supporters was sentenced to six months in prison while the other will have to complete 140 hours of community service. Neither of the two will be allowed to enter a sporting arena for 18 months.

Both supporters will have an obligation to report to the police each time that Montpellier player, for the fan who threw the firecracker this will go on indefinitely, however, for the fan who only provided the missile this arrangement will only last for 12 months.

The court also handed out a financial punishment assessing that their actions had caused Montpellier €10,788 in damages and €4,465 to Clermont Foot.

Montpellier believe that they are owed an additional €500,000 in compensation because the incident caused the club to be docked a point which they argue lost them substantial television revenue. However, the court has pushed their judgment on this particular point back until the 16th of September.

Montpellier supporters deny aiming at Mory Diaw

The supporter who threw the firecracker argues that he did not intend to aim near Diaw and had his back turned to the pitch when he chucked the pyrotechnic. He further blames his co-defendant and friend for providing him with the firecracker, although the other supporter denies this and states that he simply passed it on.
