Yesterday Adam Montgomery completed his move from Celtic to St Johnstone on loan for the upcoming year ahead. The player broke into the scene early last season and filled in admirably when chosen to represent the Hoops throughout the first half of the campaign. Funnily enough it was St Johnstone whom he played against at the end of the 2020-2021 season when the club and team were in disarray and he shone.

Now he will have the chance to impress in Perthshire on a regular basis, having tasted first-team football in the SPFL and European competition last term with Celtic. The player was played at left-back most of the time – although he had been played as a left-winger during his days with the development squad. It does appear that the Bhoys see him as a longer term project for the left side of the defence.

After completing his move to Callum Davidson’s Saints, he will now be looking at a different kind of challenge compared to that at Parkhead. Davidson’s side narrowly beat the drop down into the Scottish Championship at the end of last season on the back of a disappointing campaign. Adam will now be charged with getting the former Cup double-winning team back to their former glory.

After an underwhelming stint at Aberdeen last season too, the youngster is looking forward to his new mission at McDairmid Park. Speaking about the season ahead and his move, a delighted Montgomery told the official St Johnstone website:

“This is a big opportunity for me and I will be giving it my all every day. I’ve arrived at lunchtime today and I’ve been made to feel very welcome by the manager, his staff and the players. Callum Davidson has displayed faith in me by bringing me to St Johnstone on loan and it’s up to me to show him what I can do.

“My aim is to play as many first team games as I can and help the team win games of football. I’m going to be tested here every day and I can see the quality on the squad is good. The hard work has started and I want to show what I’m capable of.

“Every manager wants competition for places and every player wants to be pushed to their limits. That’s the way I want it to be and I will respond to every challenge put in front of me by giving 100 percent for this Football Club.”

19th December 2021; Hampden Park, Glasgow, Scotland; Scottish League Cup final, Hibernian versus Celtic: Owen Moffat and Adam Montgomery of Celtic celebrate with the trophy

Hopefully Adam finds himself in the team more often than not, unlike his time at Pittodrie. In fairness, Aberdeen were in a bit of a state last season too, which will no doubt not have helped his development. With Callum Davidson and St Johnstone eager to prove a point this year, Montgomery may have found himself a perfect home to aid his game in the meantime.
