Tigres are one step closer to booking a place in the Liguilla following a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Monarcas on Friday night.

In an all-important battle between the seventh and eighth-placed teams in Liga MX, Monarcas had to play a man down for well over an hour after VAR spotted a stomp from Monarcas’ Gabriel Achilier on Javier Aquino in the 22nd minute.

Despite the circumstances and owning just 26 per cent of the possession, Monarcas held their own and went into the half-time break at 0-0.

Whatever team talk Tuca Ferretti gave in the dressing room worked to perfection, as the visitors found themselves ahead just before the hour-mark in controversial fashion.

The referee awarded Tigres a penalty after Julián Quiñones was taken down by Sebastian Vegas, though there were strong calls for VAR from the Monarcas players.

After VAR reviewed the infraction, the men upstairs decided that the referee did not need to take a look himself, despite the questionable decision.

Juninho would then smash his penalty into the bottom corner to put Tigres ahead.

Just ten minutes later, Enner Valencia put the match out of reach with a fine finish after a fantastic ball over the top from Quiñones.

With just two matches left in the Apertura, Tigres are now in sixth place on 23 points, one point ahead of eighth-placed Monarcas.

Monarcas hold onto the final Liguilla spot with a three-point advantage over Pachuca and Querétaro, who are both in action this weekend.
