Monaco vs. Inter, a complete guide

Article image:Monaco vs. Inter, a complete guide

The Nerazurri will take the pitch again on Friday, 8 August, for the second friendly of the 2025/26 pre-season. Inter will take on Monaco at the Stade Louis II, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 CEST. The match will be available live on DAZN with a later showing on Inter TV at 24:00 CEST.

It promises to be a competitive test against a team that finished third in Ligue 1 last season, and a familiar opponent for Inter, who defeated Monaco 3–0 in their Champions League meeting last January, thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Lautaro Martínez. This game serves as another chance to build match fitness by getting time on the pitch and fine-tune tactics ahead of the official start of the new season.

BUILDING UP TO 2025/26

Christian Chivu's Nerazzurri began their season on 26 July with the training camp at the BPER Training Centre in Appiano Gentile, officially kicking off preparations for the 2025/26 Serie A season, which gets underway on Monday, 25 August at San Siro against Torino.

The first friendly has already shown promising signs; the Nerazzurri beat Inter U23 with a strong 7-2 victory, building match fitness and refining their tactical play. An encouraging start to the summer campaign.

The match against Monaco will be the first away fixture of the summer, followed by games against Monza and Olympiakos, key matches in the lead-up to the league debut.

THE OPPONENT | MONACO

Monaco come into the match against Inter unbeaten in pre-season, which began on 11 July with a 1–0 win over Cercle Bruges. That was followed by an impressive 5–0 victory against Coventry City, a goalless draw with Nottingham Forest, and a 3–0 win away to Arminia Bielefeld. In the past week, they have recorded back-to-back games with a 3–1 win over Torino and a 2–2 draw away to Ajax. Their Ligue 1 debut is scheduled for 16 August at home to Le Havre. For Adi Hütter’s side, the clash with Inter will be their final friendly before the official start of the season.

Last season was certainly intense for Monaco, who finished third in Ligue 1 with 61 points, the result of 18 wins, 7 draws, and 9 defeats. Their Coupe de France campaign came to an early end in the Round of 64, following a surprise penalty shootout elimination against Stade Reims. The Trophée des Champions final also ended in disappointment, with a last-minute 1–0 defeat to PSG in the 92nd minute. On the European front, Monaco returned to the Champions League stage. They navigated the group stage with confidence, securing 17th place in the overall rankings, but their journey ended in the play-offs, where they were knocked out by Benfica, with a 1–0 defeat and a thrilling 3–3 draw in the reverse fixture weren’t enough to progress.

Monaco are now ready to begin a new season, fuelled by several new signings made during the current transfer window. So far, the club has brought in five reinforcements. Undeniably, the most eye-catching signing is Ansu Fati, who is looking to relaunch his career. There’s also plenty of intrigue around the signing of Paul Pogba, who returns to the pitch after two years of inactivity. As for their defence, the French side have strengthened with Eric Dier, who adds experience and quality to the back line.

THE HISTORY

Inter and Monaco have met several times in both competitive and friendly fixtures. Their first clash dates back to the 1963/64 European Cup Round of 16, where the Nerazzurri won 1–0 at San Siro with Nicola Ciccolo scoring on a waterlogged pitch. In the counter-match, played in Marseille, Herrera’s Inter, despite being hit by a series of injuries, secured a memorable qualification with a 3–1 victory thanks to a brace from Mazzola and a goal from Suárez.

In 1996/97, the two sides met in the semifinal of the UEFA Cup. Inter won the first leg 3–1 in Milan, with a brace from Ganz and a goal from Zamorano, while Ikpeba scored for Monaco. In the reverse fixture, Monaco earned a 1–0 win, with Ikpeba once again on the scoresheet. Pagliuca’s decisive saves proved crucial, helping the Nerazzurri secure their place in the final.

The most recent friendly between the two sides took place in 2022 in Ferrara and ended in a 2–2 draw. The game started with Monaco taking a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Golovin and Ben Yedder, but were pegged back by Inter with goals from Gagliardini and Asllani, with Lautaro Martinez also hitting the crossbar. Their last official meeting came in last season’s Champions League, where Inter secured a 3–0 win at San Siro, with a hat-trick from Lautaro Martinez that sealed the team’s place in the Round of 16.
