Kevin Volland was among the scorers for AS Monaco as the principality side came from behind to win 3-1 away at Clermont Foot 63 on Sunday. Earlier there were wins for FC Metz and for Stade de Reims.

THE MATCH

Clermont’s fantastic start to their debut top-flight season was beginning to look like a distant memory as they went down 6-0 away at Rennes in midweek but they looked to have got that disappointment out of their system as they went in front in the seventh minute at the Stade Gabriel-Montpied. Vital N’Simba’s excellent ball into the box from the left was turned into the net by Mohamed Bayo for his fourth goal of the season.

Monaco were seeking to make it back-to-back wins for the first time since the campaign began and they were back on level terms before the half-hour mark as Caio Henrique picked out captain Wissam Ben Yedder in the box and he finished to get his fourth Ligue 1 Uber Eats goal this season (26’).

Niko Kovac’s team then built on that in the second half, going ahead just three minutes after the restart when Caio Henrique’s low delivery was turned in by Kevin Volland. The three points were then sealed in stoppage time when Myron Boadu teed up his fellow substitute Sofiane Diop to score with a cheeky back-heel flick.

After a slow start to the season, Monaco are now above Clermont in the table and back within touching distance of the European places.

The Monaco skipper has scored four goals in his team’s last three league games after failing to find the net in the first five league outings of the campaign.

Clermont have now gone six games without tasting victory after winning their first two matches in the top flight. They have let in 19 goals in those six outings.

Elsewhere on Sunday afternoon, Angers SCO missed the chance to move back into the top three as they were held to a 1-1 draw away at ESTAC Troyes. Mama Baldé ran through to put the home side ahead midway through the first half at the Stade de l’Aube, only for Thomas Mangani to restore parity from the penalty spot just past the hour mark. Troyes then had a late Oualid El Hajjam goal disallowed before captain Jimmy Giraudon was sent off. That is four games without a win now for Gérald Baticle’s Angers.

Stade de Reims moved level on points with FC Nantes after beating Les Canaris 3-1 at the Stade Auguste-Delaune as all the goals came in the second half. Thomas Foket headed Reims in front six minutes after the restart, only for Moses Simon to equalise for Nantes with a fine individual effort. However, Hugo Ekitike came off the bench put the home side in front again in the 72nd minute and then his deflected strike sealed the points 12 minutes from time.

FC Metz won 2-1 away at Stade Brestois 29 to claim their first win of the campaign and leapfrog their hosts, who are still looking for their first victory. Nicolas De Préville gave Metz the lead at the Stade Francis-Le Blé, scoring his first goal for the club on the occasion of his 250th top-flight appearance. Romain Faivre equalised from the penalty spot midway through the second half but Fabien Centonze won it for the visitors with a deflected strike.
