The Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield is certain that Wolves will sign a centre-back in the next transfer window.

Despite signing Yerson Mosquera in the summer, Hatfield feels that the Midlands club are still short in this area of the pitch and will look to rectify that in January.

What is Wolves' current situation at centre-back?

Manager Bruno Lage currently has five centre-backs to call upon to cover the three positions at the heart of his defence, including Mosquera.

However, the Colombian youngster is set to be out until 2022 after suffering a hamstring injury last month, while first-team regular Romain Saiss is likely to be unavailable for around a month in the new year while he participates in the Africa Cup of Nations.

This would leave Lage with just Conor Coady, Max Kilman and Willy Boly to choose from, and the latter has had his fair share of fitness issues in recent seasons.

What has Hatfield said about Wolves signing a new centre-back?

Hatfield believes that Wolves will be concerned by their lack of options at the back, which will lead to them bringing in a central defender at the start of 2022. He does not expect the Premier League outfit to panic buy, though, instead backing them to pick up a high-class operator in the market.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m sure of it. And I will be dumbfounded if they don’t sign a centre-back, and a quality one at that in January, because they’re just so thin on the ground in that position.”

Who could Wolves sign?

Wolves were linked with Sven Botman and Duje Caleta-Car in the recent transfer window, but failed to get either deal across the line.

They could attempt to revisit their interest in these players, particularly with Caleta-Car, who has struggled for game time in the early weeks of this season at Marseille.

Then again, Wolves may want to bring in someone with Premier League experience, meaning that they turn their attention to homegrown players.

Arsenal's Rob Holding has been out of favour for much of this season, and could be a decent option to keep things steady at the back.

Meanwhile, James Tarkowski is another player who they could target. The 28-year-old has spent over five years in the top-flight with Burnley, and is out of contract next summer, so Wolves may want to test the waters by putting a bid in for him in January.
