Former América goalkeeper Moises Muñoz has recalled the dramatic events that saw Paul Aguilar ostracised from the team before the 2014 Apertura final.
Las Águilas accounted for Monterrey in the semi-finals, but all was not well behind the scenes as the relationship between then manager Antonio Mohamed and defender Aguilera had badly deteriorated.
“After the semi-final there was a very strong problem with Mohamed,” Muñoz told the Werevertumorro YouTube channel.
“He was so strong that he relegated him [Aguilar] from the team and said goodbye to him. This was days before the final.
“We, as a group, understood that what Paul did was very wrong and that he was wrong. It was not an error from the manager, but from the player.
“He did not pay attention to those of us who wanted to advise him.”
With Aguilar sent for an early holiday, América overcame Tigres 3-1 on aggregate in the two-legged decider.
The player would return the following season and continue to represent the Azulcrema until his contract was allowed run down last December.
Mohamed would leave the club after the championship success, but not before delivering the scathing line: “I will leave them the cup, but I am taking my dignity.”
Oh, to have been a fly on the wall in that dressing room!
