Mohamed Salah etched his name further into Liverpool’s record books despite suffering a 5-2 defeat against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.
Off the back of consecutive victories for the first time since the turn of the year, Liverpool headed into the first leg of their Champions League tie against defending champions Madrid full of confidence.
It was no surprise that Jurgen Klopp opted to name an unchanged XI from the Newcastle game with Darwin Nunez passing a late fitness test to keep his place in the line-up.
Liverpool started the game on the front foot and broke the deadlock in the fourth-minute courtesy of Nunez’s cheeky finish.
Salah provided a lovely cross for Nunez’s strike and in doing so, he became the Liverpool player with the most UCL assists having set up his 13th goal for the Reds in Europe’s premier club competition.
Buoyed by their opener, Liverpool continue to take control of proceedings which led to their second of the night as Salah seized upon an error from Thibaut Courtois to score.
That was the Egyptian’s 42nd Champions League goal for Liverpool since joining in 2017, moving him one clear of club legend Steven Gerrard.
Having taken a two-goal lead, Salah and Liverpool were in cruise control, but what followed was arguably the lowest point of what has been an underwhelming season to date.
Two goals in a 15-minute spell from Vinicius Junior saw Liverpool head into the half-time break on level terms.
The Merseyside-based outfit would eventually trail to Eder Militao’s 47th-minute header after which Karim Benzema’s brace added more gloss to an astonishing turnaround at Anfield.
Ahead of the return leg in three weeks, Liverpool have it all to do as they set out to overturn a three-goal deficit at Santiago Bernabeu.
