So just how have these two January recruits settled in so quickly? Since Didier Digard took charge in January, Nice haven't lost a game. The new coach has lifted the football club, but he's been helped by shrewd transfer business from the Nice's new sporting director, signed from Lens, Florent Ghisolfi. "We needed to reduce the numbers in the squad and bring in players who could have had an impact straight away," said new coach Digard. "And Florent has hit the bullseye." Faultless
The priority was a new centre-forward, and Nice made no mistake. Nigeria international Terem Moffi got straight down to work after becoming Nice's record signing: he has scored five goals and made two more in just nine appearances.
What's more, his fearless attitude has endeared him to both the Nice fans and the coaching staff. "We're very pleased with what he's done," explained Digard. "He has a faultless attitude, he works hard and plays for the team.' Surprise packet
While Moffi's arrival was on the cards, that of Youssouf Ndayishimiye was more unexpected. Signed from Istanbul Basaksehir, the 24-year-old from Burundi has already impressed in a variety of positions, from central defence to full-back to midfield. "Youssouf gives us a lot of tactical flexibility. He's really helpful to us," said Digard, with captain and stopper Dante backing him up. "The club had been following him for some time. We've got ourselves a very good player who not many people knew. Let's hope he has a great career with us!" Physically strong, he can win possession, score goals and use to technique to launch attacks. In short, for Digard, Ndiyashimiye is a coach's dream.
"He's solid in defence, invaluable in midfield. He has settled quickly and enabled us to change formations. He makes the opposition adapt to us. Youssouf is a player who makes the coach's life a lot easier." But how does he do it? "Physically, he's very impressive!" marvelled Dante. "He works very hard but he can also play in two positions, both at centre-back and in midfield. He's very intelligent and his integration in the team was quick. I think he has everything he needs to reach the very top!" Nice haven't yet tasted defeat with their new boys… Should Digard's side overcome the next test, at home to PSG, Europe could well be beckoning for the southerners. But, whatever happens on Saturday, the future looks bright in Nice.
