German side Borussia Mönchengladbach are targeting Leeds United defender Maximilian Wöber for a permanent summer transfer, after the defender impressed on loan at the club this season.

The Austrian defender has been an important part of Die Fohlen this season, starting every game he has been available for in the Bundesliga and impressing at centre-back during those appearances.

Wöber joined the Bundesliga club in the summer on loan after a disappointing first six months at Leeds. The defender joined the Yorkshire side from Red Bull Salzburg in a £11 million deal in January, but he could not stop the Whites being relegated from the Premier League back to the Championship.

He made just 16 league appearances for Leeds last season, and based on current reports it looks like he may have played his last game at Elland Road, if Daniel Farke agrees to let the player leave in the summer.

Monchengladbach want to make Wöber deal permement in the summer

Recent reports indicate that Mönchengladbach are attempting to make Wöber one of their permanent summer signings, although finding the money has become the issue for the German side.

The German side currently sit 12th in the Bundesliga, and have struggled defensive so far this season, having conceded the second-most goals of any side in the division.

Despite this, the club are impressed with Wöber contributions this season, and the Rheinische Post (via Sport Witness) have reported that Gladbach are finding ways to raise funds in order to make the defender's move to Germany a permanent stay.

They reported that, at the moment, the only centre-back who looks likely to remain at the club next season is 18-year-old Fabio Chiarodia, and that they are doing everything they can to raise funds in order to finance the move for the Leeds defender.

While Farke has not commented on whether he would allow Wöber to leave the club in the summer, the sale would help pay for further additions to the Leeds squad in the future.

Leeds could sign Ben Godfrey in centre-back shake-up

With Wöber looking like he won't be returning to Leeds next season, Daniel Farke's side have a bit of a shake up in defence to work out.

Already this season they have been linked with moves for defenders both in and out of the club, with some moves likely to happen between now and the end of the season.

If the Whites do manage to pick up a transfer fee for the Austrian defender, it looks like the money could be used to sign Ben Godfrey from Everton, as has been reported by Football Insider.

The club are said to be looking for a loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of the season, which would be a fantastic addition to the squad for this season and beyond.

With difficulties in agreeing a permanent deal for Joe Rodon and with Charlie Cresswell rumoured to be leaving the club this month, the addition of Godfrey would be a fantastic signing with Premier League experience, and selling Wöber to help pay for the transfer would be a shrewd move by Farke.
