Mohamed Salah is out for revenge against Real Madrid.

As Liverpool‘s star man prepares for the Champions League final this weekend, you can be pretty sure that the events of four years previous will be playing over and over in his head.

That’s because the Reds were on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline against the very same opponents that they will lock horns with in the 2022 final at the Stade de France.

Ramos’ tackle on Salah

In a game that will forever be remembered for Loris Karius’ goalkeeping catastrophe, Gareth Bale’s brace and Karim Benzema’s opportunistic strike ensured that Los Blancos claimed the title.

However, things could easily have been so much different had Salah not been forced off through injury in the first-half as a direct consequence of Sergio Ramos’ controversial tackle.

Salah was left reeling in pain after Ramos had brought him to ground with what some supporters and players consider to be a deliberately aggressive tackle meant to take him out of the game.

But regardless of Ramos’ intentions going into the ‘arm lock’ challenge, the end result was Salah exiting the pitch in floods of tears before the final had really had chance to get going.

In fact, the way that Ramos brought Salah down was so controversial that a Judo organisation even chimed in on the debate with a tweet that instantly went viral.

The European Judo Union amassed thousands of retweets and ‘likes’ for essentially explaining that Ramos’ tackle was so dangerous that a similar move isn’t even allowed in their discipline.

The post, which was accompanied by an admittedly amusing meme, explained: “Waki-gatame is a dangerous technique. That’s why it is not allowed in Judo to use for transition to ne-waza.”

You know your tackle might have bordered into the realms of being too aggressive when a respected authority in the world of martial arts thinks it was too aggressive for even their sport.

Salah out for revenge

So, although Ramos now dons the colours of Paris Saint-Germain, there is an added incentive for Salah to exact revenge on Real Madrid by winning a second Champions League title.

It would be the perfect way for the Egyptian to lift two fingers up at the Spanish giants and perhaps even propel himself to a Ballon d’Or trophy in the process.

However, on the back of what happened back in 2018, Salah might well just be grateful to make it through 90 minutes in one piece having ensured that Real don’t get the better of Liverpool again.
