AC Milan announced the signing of Malick Thiaw from Schalke 04 yesterday, managing to wrap up and operation they have been trying to complete for some time.
According to MilanNews, Milan have been after Thiaw since January but Schalke 04 were asking for over €10m then. However, this time out of necessity they decided to sell the German U21 international for €5m plus €2m in bonuses, and he signed a contract with the Rossoneri until 2027.
The report mentions how Paolo Maldini’s call was once again crucial just as it was in the Theo Hernandez and Fikayo Tomori operations.
Thiaw stated: “It’s incredible, I haven’t realised it yet. I met Maldini for the first time today, it was crazy, I was very happy. I was excited, I immediately told my parents when they called me.”
Maldini, Ricky Massara and the scouting area chose a physically strong centre-back at 1.94m tall to help overcome the problem of crosses, but they also chose a young player who can grow.
Thiaw actually already has plenty of experience with over 60 appearances for the first team at Schalke, and the feeling is that Milan did well to wrap up an operation worth a maximum of €7m
