MN: Two and a half years and 135 games – Pioli looks for the icing on the cake

Stefano Pioli’s Milan are one step away from the dream of winning the Scudetto, which would be a fitting achievement for a group who have never given up.

As MilanNews writes, it was back on 9 October 2019 that Pioli replaced Marco Giampaolo as the head coach and was initially believed to be an interim solution until the arrival of a new head coach the following summer.

He slowly convinced everyone including the management who decided to snub the idea of hiring Ralf Rangnick to overhaul the club. Pioli let his work do the talking, improving results but also young players such as Fikayo Tomori, Pierre Kalulu, Rafael Leao, Theo Hernandez, Ismael Bennacer, Sandro Tonali, Davide Calabria and Alexis Saelemaekers.

The presence of some experienced leaders like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Simon Kjaer and Olivier Giroud has certainly helped, but the numbers can make Pioli smile: 135 games in charge of Milan in all competitions with 76 wins, 34 draws and 25 defeats, at an average of 1.94 points per game.

The icing on the cake for the excellent work done in two and a half would certainly come on Sunday if the team get a point and win the Scudetto against Sassuolo, but focus is more important now than ever.
