MN: Theo’s report card must be a ‘warning’ to Fonseca ahead of Milan derby

Several of AC Milan’s stars have started the season poorly. Of course, the way that certain players are evaluated differs for a multitude of reasons, and Theo Hernandez has, perhaps, been a victim of this.

Looking purely on paper, Theo Hernandez is a fantastic left-back who epitomises the job of a modern-day full-back. In the past few seasons, he has been that and more for Milan and has been a point of reliability throughout.

This season, though, the Frenchman is everything but that. He has started the season poorly, he has been accused of lacking effort, and he seems miles away from the player who appeared for France and the European Championship in the summer, let alone the player the Rossoneri have been in love with for years.

Unfortunately, his poor start to the season has extended to international duty, and Milan News refers to L’Equipe’s report card when evaluating his current position.

Whilst he was on the ball often, he did not offer much. He struggled defensively and made some fatal errors which saw Les Bleus concede twice. Notably for the third Italian goal of the evening, he took too long to press his man, something which dragged his score down.

With this in mind, we must look to the game against Inter, where there are similarities in systems. Hernandez was caught napping against Spalletti’s side, and Simone Inzaghi could look to do the same thing against Paulo Fonseca. Therefore, the Portuguese coach must determine how to avoid this problem, with or without Theo.
