Vancouver Whitecaps’ 2023 campaign came to an end in incredible fashion on Sunday.

Facing LAFC in game two of their best-of-three series having lost the opener, the Canadian club found themselves behind 1-0 deep into injury-time and sent everyone forward for a last minute corner kick.

But when the ball made its way to the edge of the area and the Whitecaps attempted to send it back into the area, the referee had other ideas with one of most unfortunate collisions you will ever see (which can be viewed at 5:07).

From the resulting counter-attack, LAFC appeared to put the game beyond doubt only for their goal to be ruled out by VAR – but the damage had already been done as Vancouver’s season came to an end in shock fashion.

“In the end we didn’t have a fair chance to be honest because unfortunately the referee had a bad game,” coach Vanni Sartini raged afterwards.

“I don’t understand why he didn’t stop play because every time the referee touches the ball play is stopped and gives the ball to the team in possession. I don’t know why he didn’t do that.”

The inquest is likely to continue.
