Do you think the Miami coaching staff took this game seriously? Only ONE player (Maximiliano Falcón) who started the mid-week match against Vancouver started at the whistle. One. All the same, despite giving up a shock goal in the 8th they rallied to go up 3 – 1. Then the wheels fell off the bus as Dallas blasted three to deliver Miami their first (league) loss of the season. We’ve been hating on Dallas all season, but to be fair their record isn’t that bad and we might be owning them an apology….
The ‘Caps started THREE from the Cup lineup, and did just fine. In the second half they did sub on regular starters Sebastian Berhalter and Pedro Vite. This proved a shrewd move as they would swiftly put three in the net in the 55th, 68th and 70th minutes. Unlike Miami, there was no total defensive collapse, and Wil Trapp’s late goal for the Loons did not threaten Vancouver in the slightest.
This is not a baseball scoreline. Sam Surridge finally found his shooting boots, slamming a hat-trick plus one (though two came from PKs). He was joined by Hany Mukhtar who notched a brace, plus an assist. Central defender Jeisson Palacios also scored off a header. All this before the hour mark. What an embarrassing showing for Chicago, who continue to spiral down the toilet bowl. Their two consolation goals at least showed heart.
Given SKC’s recent form, you’d expect Cincy to win. I’m including this match in the write ups because of Kevin Denkey. He scored a goal in both halves, but that second was a thing of beauty: a majestic bike. He then gave the crowd a gun show, stripping off the kit and making the argument that he should be a male model.
Don’t be deceived by the scoreline, this was a fantastically open and thrilling match. Both teams were frustratingly close with first half efforts, either missing just wide or forcing the keeper to earn their paycheck. In the end, it was a delicious curling effort from Carles Gil’s left foot that found the far nettin past keeper Kristijan Kahlina.
