MLS head Don Garber says Inter Miami “need to be creative” to lure Lionel Messi to USA | OneFootball

According to an interview with Don Garber, the head of Major League Soccer (MLS), the Inter Miami hierachy will need to be creative if they want to sign Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi at the end of the season. Garber explained that the league would be open to facilitating Messi’s arrival, even if it meant approving unusual financial arrangements.

“The MLS is a unique entity. If you’re selling something that belongs to the collective, the collective needs to approve it. So, whatever decision Jorge Mas (owner of Inter Miami) makes, with the help of Todd Durbin (MLS Executive Vice President) to structure something, if we have an opportunity to do it, it will be outside the box,” Garber told The Athletic.

Garber also noted that any deal would need to be structured in a way that meets Messi and his family’s needs. However, he admitted that it was unclear how exactly that could be achieved at this point.

“It would have to be structured in a way that works for him and his family. How that would be? Honestly, we don’t know today,” Garber added.

According to L’Équipe earlier this month, Messi was reported to have been no longer inclined towards extending his contract at PSG. Potential destinations for the Argentine international included a return to Barcelona, as well as a move to Inter Miami.

When he arrived at the beginning of last season, Messi signed a two-year deal with PSG. He had struggled during his opening campaign but had looked more comfortable in Les Parisiens’ front line this campaign, and had also stated that he felt much happier in the French capital of late. However, if the reports by L’Équipe were to be believed, Messi may have been coming towards the end of his time at PSG.
