Major League Soccer announced that they have fined New England Revolution manager Caleb Porter after his comments criticizing the referees in New England’s 1-1 draw with Chicago Fire last weekend.
MLS Communications has stated that Porter was in ‘violation of the league’s public criticism policy’.
The long-time MLS boss had plenty to say about the officials’ performances throughout the opening weeks of the campaign.
“They don’t let us talk to (the referees). When we do, we get fined or get warned or reprimanded,” Porter said.
“We can’t say anything to them, I’ll probably get fined for even mentioning it right now. But I don’t care because I got to protect my team and something needs to be done about it.”
The young season has been marred by plenty of refereeing errors, due in large part to the fact that ‘replacement referee’s have been overseeing the matches while the league’s usual officials negotiated a new contract with MLS executives.
However, a deal was struck between the two parties this week and officials from the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) will return to action this weekend.
