MLS club Charlotte FC have confirmed the appointment of Dean Smith as their new head coach.

The 52-year-old has put pen to paper on a ‘multi-year-contract’ to take charge of the club, who have been looking for a replacement for Christian Lattanzio, who they sacked at the end of the last MLS season.

Smith has been out of work since his short-term contract at Leicester City ended at the end of the 2022/23 season after failing to keep the Foxes in the Premier League.

His spell at Aston Villa saw him bring the Villans back up to the Premier League via the playoffs in 2019.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Smith said: “I’m honoured to be appointed as the next head coach of Charlotte FC and cannot wait to start preparations for the 2024 season.

“Throughout the interview process, it was clear that this is an ambitious club with the right ingredients for success and I’m delighted to begin a new chapter in Charlotte.

“This is a unique opportunity to be part of a project with so much potential to take to new heights in Major League Soccer.”
