FC Köln defender Jonas Hector will make a decision on his playing career at the end of the season, according to Bild. The 32-year-old’s current deal expires in 2023 and there’s a possibility that he could retire from professional football.

Speaking to Bild, Köln head coach Steffen Baumgart said: “I would do anything for him to stay,” but a decision won’t be made any time soon. “This decision won’t be made until the end of the season. You don’t just put a gun to Jonas’ chest, that’s not how it works. He does a lot of things out of his gut and doesn’t let himself be guided. I think Jonas is thinking it over quietly and will wait until the last day to decide.”

Kicker also suggest that Hector will make a decision one the season comes to an end but unlike Bild, they name the MLS as an option for the left-back after ruling out a change within Europe.

There’s three options for Hector: extend his contract at Köln beyond 2023, move to the MLS or end his playing career. A star for the Billy Goats, the 32-year-old is a club legend but likes to stay out of the limelight and is often unapproachable, even for fans.

Hansi Flick wanted to call up Hector to the Germany squad for the World Cup but although flattered by the request, Hector didn’t want to come out of international retirement to represent Die Mannschaft after playing his last game in October 2020.
