The best stars from MLS and Liga MX went head-to-head on Wednesday with the American league coming out on top 2-1.
Scorers: Vela 3âČ, RuidĂaz 73âČ (P); Ălvarez 84âČ
It was a fast-paced encounter at Allianz Field as some of footballâs top talent took to the pitch but it was the MLS side who showed they had something to prove as they came out flying.
An LAFC connection opened the scoring after just three minutes when Diego Palacios teed up Carlos Vela at the back post. It was the fastest goal in MLS All-Star Game history since 2010.
However, as time went on the Liga MX stars built up their attack and had 10 attempts compared to three for the hosts.
Chivas ace Fernando BeltrĂĄn and Cruz Azul defender Juan Escobar, in particular, forced goalkeepers Andre Blake (Philadelphia Union) and Dayne St. Clair (Minnesota United) to be on high alert.
The action continued into the second half as the match remained a one-goal contest with bragging rights still on the line.
Monterrey attacker GermĂĄn Berterame and Pumas ace Juan Dinenno both came inches away from an equaliser while Paul Arriola of FC Dallas had a goal ruled offside at the other end.
Drama then ensued towards the end of the match for both sides.
First, the referee pointed to the spot for a controversial penalty which RaĂșl RuidĂaz (Seattle Sounders) converted for 2-0.
But then the stars from the Mexican league showed they were not giving up just yet and Pachuca defender Kevin Ălvarez smashed the ball home for 2-1 before seeing penalty claims of their own fall short minutes later.
In the end, the late strike could not kick start a comeback and the players from the American league have now won back-to-back MLS All-Star Games over Liga MX.
