Inter striker Lautaro Martinez may well have lost his starting place for the Argentine national team at the World Cup due to a string of disappointing performances in the group stage.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who claim that after three matches without a goal, Manchester City striker Julain Alvarez may well be ahead of the Inter player in the pecking order for the Albiceleste.

Martinez started on the bench for yesterday’s do-or-die match against Poland, with Alvarez starting in his place.

The Man City striker managed to get on the scoresheet for the Albiceleste’s second goal to essentially put the game to bed.

This was something Martinez had been unable to do in his two starts against Saudi Arabia and Mexico.

The Nerazzurri striker did have the chance to play as a substitute for Alvarez in the second half, however.

The 25-year-old received a gift-wrapped chance to open his World Cup account, but pulled his effort wide of the far post.

Now, the Gazzetta suggests, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni will have real doubts about whether he can continue on with the misfiring Nerazzurri striker as his first-choice centre-forward throughout the knockouts.
