Minnesota United sign Jonathan Gonzalez on loan from Monterrey | OneFootball

Minnesota United have completed the signing of midfielder Jonathan Gonzalez on loan from Liga MX giants Monterrey.

Gonzalez joins until the end of the 2022 MLS season following another loan spell with Mexican side Queretaro. To make the deal happen, Minnesota United paid the Colorado Rapids $50,000 in General Allocation Money to acquire the player's discovery rights.

Still only 23 years old, Gonzalez has three senior caps to his name for Mexico after famously picking El Tri over the United States in 2018. Gonzalez, who was born in California to Mexican parents, has 123 appearances under his belt at club level for Monterrey, Club Necaxa, and Queretaro, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

Gonzalez is best known for his defensive and passing capabilities and will join the likes of Kervin Arriaga, Wil Trapp, and Joseph Rosales at the heart of Adrian Heath's midfield.

“For a young player, he’s 23 years old, Gonzalez has played a lot of games and big games for Monterrey. I remember watching him in a [Concacaf] Champions League game a couple of years ago and coming away thinking he was the best player on the field,” Heath said in a club press release.

“We are hopeful he can resurrect his career here because a couple of years ago, he looked as though he was going to be one of the bright things of Mexican football.”

Gonzalez joins Colombian forward Mender Garcia and Paraguayan right-back Alan Benitez as the Loons' third signing this summer.

Minnesota United currently sit fourth in the Western Conference and travel to Nashville SC on Sunday.
