Aston Villa’s inconsistent season continued yesterday when they dropped points to West Ham United at Villa Park.
It has been a very bizarre season for Villa, they are through to the next round in the Champions League, still in the FA Cup and find ourselves just four points off the Champions League qualification spots in the Premier League. It doesn’t sound too bad, does it?
When Unai Emery first arrived, he built a free-flowing side that was one of the most entertaining to watch in the Premier League. Are we good to watch this season? I’m not so sure. Would a neutral have wanted to tune in to watch Villa vs. West Ham on TV? Again, I’m not so sure.
Mistakes are common, while dominant performances are rare. Emery is a stickler for perfection, so I have no doubt he isn’t delusional and will want to make things right. Something isn’t right on the pitch this season, and I can’t put my finger on it.
Emery brought Jacob Ramsey back into the team after he was rested for the defeat against Monaco in the Champions League and it took just eight minutes for the midfielder to give the hosts the lead.
Ollie Watkins picked out Ramsey whose clever first touch took him past Vladimír Coufal before slotting past Łukasz Fabiański in the West Ham goal as Villa dominated early on.
Villa had chances to double their lead through Youri Tielemans and Watkins but both failed to capitalize and then things turned for the home side.
Tyrone Mings went down for a long period when he collided with Mohammed Kudus. Despite his best efforts to continue he stopped play moments later as he left the pitch in tears. Lucas Digne was moved into centre-back as Villa had no other left-footed central defenders and Ian Maatsen was introduced.
The visitors were boosted by the change and dominated proceedings in the second half as Villa looked uncomfortable.
Ezri Konsa came to the host’s rescue on the hour mark but the visitors got their deserved equaliser 10 minutes later.
Mexican international Edson Álvarez crossed the ball from the right wing, finding Emerson at the back post who headed home to pull the game level.
Graham Potter thought his side won it late on but the goal was ruled out through offside as both sides had to settle for a share of the points.
