The departure of Jed Wallace has been an obvious blow for Millwall this summer but you have to be impressed with their other business the Championship club has done in the window so far.

Re-signing Benik Afobe makes perfect sense after his excellent loan spell from Stoke City while playmaking duo George Honeyman and Zian Flemming should help replace the creativity they’ve lost in Wallace.

In terms of exits, getting rid of Mahlon Romeo is another example of sensible thinking as the right-back has looked out of favour at The Den for some time and it was the right moment for Alex Pearce to move on.

Their dealings over the last month or so should leave fans confident in the decision-making of Gary Rowett and the club chiefs but QPR’s interest in Danny McNamara may well still be cause for concern.

Sources have informed Football League World that the defender is on the R’s radar as their new manager Michael Beale looks to add attacking full-backs – with the former Aston Villa coach keen on using them to overload wide areas.

The west London club are understood to be planning a raid for the 23-year-old but his exit is something that Millwall simply cannot allow to happen.

A product of the Lions academy system, 2021/22 was a breakthrough season for the defender and he became a key asset due to his bursting runs down the right flank.

Getting to this point has not been a slow process, with plenty of loan spells before he really cemented a place in the first team, but Millwall, and the player himself, are now seeing the fruits of those labours.

With the most significant season of his career under his belt, you’d bank on McNamara kicking on next term and bettering the two goals and two assists he contributed in the last campaign.

Cashing in on him now would seem counter-productive and rob supporters of their chance to see the homegrown talent make further strides in a Millwall shirt.

Not only would it weaken the Lions but they’d be strengthening a Championship rival while there are no obvious alternatives to him in the squad.

It’s not a move that will be well received by the fanbase and it’s one that the club simply should not allow to happen.
