Millwall are close to completing a deal to sign Liverpool left-back Calum Scanlon on loan for the 2024/25 campaign, according to London News Online.

The 19-year-old, who represents England at youth level, joined Liverpool from Birmingham City in 2021.

Millwall head coach Neil Harris has made it clear that he wants to strengthen his squad before the transfer deadline on Friday, and it looks like Scanlon could be the first of a few deals completed by the Lions in the next couple of days.

Cardiff City midfielder Ryan Wintle is also poised to sign for Millwall on loan to add to Harris' options.

While Scanlon regularly played for Liverpool's under-21s side in Premier League 2 last season, he also featured in the first team on a couple of occasions too.

The highly-rated young full-back was brought on from the bench twice by Jurgen Klopp in the Europa League last term, playing against Toulouse at Anfield and Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium as the Reds reached the knockout stages of the competition.

He also appeared on the bench in the Premier League against Brentford and Everton in the Merseyside derby, as well as in Liverpool's Carabao Cup ties with Southampton and Bournemouth.

Scanlon got another taste of playing against senior players in the EFL Trophy, and scored for Liverpool under-21s as they beat Morecambe in their opening game of the group stage.

Earlier this year, Scanlon signed a new contract with Liverpool, and is now set to join Millwall on loan to further his development and gain experience of being in a first team environment on a regular basis.

Millwall need reinforcements

Millwall have made a disappointing start to the new season, having taken just one point from their first three Championship games and been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League One side Leyton Orient.

They conceded seven goals in their opening two fixtures, prior to the 0-0 draw against Hull City, so it is not a huge surprise that Harris is poised to bring in a new defender in Scanlon.

Millwall's current first choice left-back is Joe Bryan, and while Murray Wallace can play there if needed, he struggled in the defeat against Leyton Orient in the Carabao Cup, and the Lions arguably needed some extra cover in that area of the pitch regardless.

Scanlon started playing left-back midway through his youth career, and has spoken about needing to work on the defensive side of his game, so he should be able to contribute offensively as well as handling his defensive duties during his time at Millwall.

His ultimate goal is to break into the first team at Liverpool, and if he can enjoy a successful loan spell at The Den, he will do no harm to his chances of making it at Anfield.
