Coventry City will be desperate to get more points on the board sooner rather than later following their defeat against Millwall this weekend.

Initially looking as though they were on course to take all three points away from The Den, with Kyle McFadzean and Matt Godden putting them in the ascendancy, a capitulation in the English capital ruined their chances of improving what has been a difficult start to the campaign.

Almost losing against Sunderland and suffering a heavy defeat against Bristol City in midweek, things got even worse yesterday with Jake Cooper giving the Lions hope before second-half goals from George Honeyman and George Saville consigned them to a heartbreaking loss.

Gustavo Hamer’s red card midway through the second 45 didn’t exactly help their cause – and they will be disappointed to lose him for next weekend’s game against Huddersfield Town with Callum O’Hare still on the sidelines at this stage.

Taking one point from a possible four, combined with their pitch situation and Carabao Cup defeat, has probably left them deflated in the early stages of this season.

Looking less at morale and more at the latest news surrounding the club though, we take a look at some of the headlines concerning the Sky Blues.

Manager Mark Robins has openly admitted that his side didn’t deal well enough with the Lions’ aerial presence yesterday afternoon, speaking to the Sky Blues’ media team.

He said: “We have to deal with things better than we did and if we could deal with their aerial presence and the runs that come from it then you’ll be alright, but we didn’t deal with it well enough and that meant they built a bit more pressure and got up.

“We’d given them too much and allowed them to change the direction of the game and where it was headed but that cost us the game.

“It’s that solitary moment because you end up running around in this heat more than you do and we were running a lot anyway, we’ve got to learn lessons because we can’t throw points away and we’ve thrown points away today.”

Going 2-0 up after 28 minutes, they looked to be on course to secure their first three points of the season but a spirited comeback from the hosts ruled that out, managing to cope well despite the loss of Jed Wallace.

In fairness to the Lions, they moved quickly to secure the likes of George Honeyman and Zian Flemming to fill the void Wallace had created, but it was still a disappointing result for the visitors regardless.

Before yesterday’s game, Robins revealed to Coventry Live that Martyn Waghorn isn’t on the verge of linking up with old club Derby County despite the forward being linked with the Rams.

The Sky Blues already have the likes of Godden, Viktor Gyokeres, Tyler Walker and Fabio Tavares all at the Sky Blues’ disposal at this stage, potentially enabling the 32-year-old to move on.

Derby, meanwhile, are still in the process of building their team and could certainly benefit from having another striker at their disposal with Jack Stretton making a loan exit.

Robins, however, has ruled that out for now as he said (via Derbyshire Live): “No, honestly, there’s nothing (in the link). It’s a story that’s been propagated, but things change don’t they?”

Kane’s future

Defender Todd Kane has undergone a knee operation but that isn’t set to damage his chances of securing a move away from the CBS Arena, according to Coventry Live.

The club and player are both confident that a recovery can be made in time before the summer window closes – with the player actively seeking a move away after being deemed surplus to requirements by the Sky Blues.

Both Josh Eccles and Fankaty Dabo are ahead of him in the pecking order at this stage and if the duo can remain fit, it will be difficult to see the 28-year-old being given the chance to shine at all.

And at this stage, it’s currently unclear who will move to secure him a transfer away from the Midlands.
