Millwall are hoping to complete the signing of Morecambe winger Adam Mayor ahead of the January transfer deadline.

Adam Mayor’s career so far

The 18-year-old is a name that many Millwall fans may not be aware of, as he has spent his professional career with Morecambe, having featured regularly for the Shrimps in League One last year.

He was one of a few bright spots for the club as they were relegated to League Two, and he has continued to impress, scoring three goals and registering five assists in 23 games so far in the fourth tier.

There aren’t many players of Mayor's age who have established themselves as a regular in the Football League, so he is rightly regarded as an exciting talent.

Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that Mayor is attracting transfer interest, and the Mirror reporter Dan Marsh has revealed that Joe Edwards is looking to bring the teenager to The Den before the deadline later this week.

It remains to be seen what sort of fee would be required to get the deal done, but it’s unlikely to be too much of an issue for the Londoners, with Mayor having also entered the final 18 months of his contract with Morecambe.

Adam Mayor can make the step up

Of course, there will need to be a lot of patience with Mayor if this move does happen, as we’re talking about a real youngster who is still making his way in the game.

Millwall know that, and they are certainly buying him with the future in mind, and he’s not going to be someone who single handedly drags the Lions up the table as they look to move clear of the relegation zone over the coming months.

But, it’s good for the fans to see that the club are looking ahead, and with Edwards’ track record in youth football, he could be the ideal figure to ensure Mayor goes on to hit the heights that many expect of him.

That’s not to say he won’t have a role to play this season, as Mayor has been featuring in the Football League for the past 18 months, so he is a talent and will be signed to go into the first-team squad.

Nevertheless, you can be sure that Edwards and the coaching staff have a clear plan in mind in how they want to integrate the wide man if the move does happen.

Millwall’s January transfer plans

As mentioned, this would be an exciting addition looking to the long-term, and Millwall have also made some shrewd additions for the here and now in the form of Japhet Tanganga and Michael Obafemi.

The squad still looks weak in one or two areas, so it will be interesting to see if anything else happens over the next two days.
