Millwall and Swansea City have both launched formal bids for Rotherham United forward Chiedozie Ogbene, according to this morning’s report from Wales Online.

The Republic of Ireland international looks set to leave South Yorkshire in the summer as things stand, with his contract at the AESSEAL New York Stadium expiring at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

This has given the Millers a tough decision to take on his future, with another key player in Dan Barlaser also looking set to leave the club in the summer unless he puts pen to paper on fresh terms.

MILLWALL WERE FOUNDED IN 1884

The midfielder is currently the subject of interest from Middlesbrough though and with the player reported to be open to a move, there may be little chance of the 25-year-old signing a new contract at this stage.

Ogbene isn’t short of interest either, with Millwall and Swansea both believed to have him on their radar at this stage after seeing him record seven goals and two assists in 24 competitive appearances this season.

Wales Online that the Lions and the Swans have both gone as far as making bids for the Irishman, though Rotherham are holding firm at this stage as they potentially look to generate the best possible fee for him.

The Verdict:

You have to wonder whether it’s worth the Millers cashing in on him now because it’s not as if he has a huge amount of time left on his contract, something that will limit the amount they will be able to generate for him.

Losing both him and Barlaser for nothing would be painful though and if they can cash in on one of those players, that could give them the funds needed to bring in a replacement.

They also lost the likes of Michael Ihiekwe, Freddie Ladapo and Michael Smith last summer for nothing, so they will be particularly wary about potentially seeing another couple of key players depart without gaining a financial reward from it.

Neither Millwall nor Swansea should be involved in a relegation scrap this season though and that’s one reason why Rotherham could decide to cash in on him – because it’s not as if a possible relegation rival like Wigan are interested in him.

The Millers can’t afford to strengthen those sorts of sides by selling Ogbene to them if they want to give themselves the best chance of remaining in the division – but they could probably sell him to the Lions or the Swans so it will be interesting to see whether he stays put or not.
