Everton are right to be thinking three years ahead when it comes to recruitment, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United and England defender delivered his verdict after transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed the Toffees are working on the signing of young Norwich City full-back Max Aarons.

Seamus Coleman is currently Carlo Ancelotti’s first-choice right-back but the lack of strength in depth in the position was exposed when the Irishman was injured earlier this season.

Centre-backs Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey, Aarons’ former Norwich teammate, filled in when Coleman suffered a muscle injury that saw him miss seven games across November and December.

Everton’s only other natural right-back Jonjoe Kenny joined Celtic on loan in January after making just one Premier League start all season.

Asked whether Everton were right to plan for life after Coleman by moving for Aarons, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Definitely.

“They always know they have to evolve and keep going forward, it’s as simple as that. You can’t stand still.

“Some of the best recruitment of the last 10-15 years in the Premier League, Southampton were exceptional because they were always looking two-three years ahead.

“They weren’t looking at recruitment now, they were thinking what manager are they going to have in two or three years. All these types of things.

“It’s really important to look at long-term at replacements who you may well have to bring in.”

Aarons has been an ever-present for Norwich this season as they sit seven points clear at the top of the Championship.

He was also a regular in the Premier League last season where he registered two assists in 38 games.
