Mills names two Tottenham players who could be the next Eriksen | OneFootball

Tanguy Ndombele has been pushed further back into the Tottenham midfield as Jose Mourinho does not fully trust his defence.

That is the view of ex-England and Manchester City defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Frenchman’s best position after Mourinho revealed he was not happy with his recent output.

The Spurs boss told French TV channel Canal+, as relayed by Football.London, earlier this month: “Tanguy is the kind of guy who you always expect more than what he gives you, because he is so talented that you always expect more.”

The 24-year-old formed a three-man midfield alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Moussa Sissoko earlier this season when Spurs lost just three of their opening 19 games.

Since then, however, he has been pushed back alongside Hojbjerg with Sissoko having to settle for a place on the bench.

“It’s working out the balance,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Once upon a time that creative midfield player was Christian Eriksen and he was absolutely superb and the understanding he had with those other attacking players was brilliant.

“Now it’s been Ndombele, it could be Dele Alli.

“But until Mourinho gets his defence sorted out he’s always a little bit concerned with what happens in the rest of the team.

“He doesn’t trust that defence and that’s the biggest problem of it all. He doesn’t believe they have the confidence to do what he wants so he has to tweak the rest of the team for that.”

Ndombele was one of the only Tottenham players to emerge with any credit from their 3-1 loss to Manchester United at the weekend.

He finished with a pass completion rate of 94 per cent [Wyscout] as they fell six points behind the top four.
