Millonarios beat the odds and won their match over Corinthians, who had little to play for.
Despite the huge win, Independiente won their match in the other half of Group G, relegating the Colombians to the Copa Sudamericana.
Corinthians was by far the better team on the pitch, outshooting their opponents 20-6 and forcing them to commit 21 fouls – opposed to just five for the Brazilians. Despite this and their 65% possession advantage, they would never find the breakthrough.
It was going to take something spectacular to beat Corinthians on their home pitch, and Carrillo would produce just that – nailing the top corner from distance.
