The USA broke Mexico hearts for the second time this summer in a dramatic Concacaf Gold Cup final on Sunday in Las Vegas.
Scorers: Robinson 117′
Edson Álvarez’s error led to a glorious chance for USA captain Paul Arriola midway through the first half but the DC United winger hit the outside of the upright.
Matt Turner was definitely the busier of the two goalkeepers, with Mexico striker Rogelio Funes Mori – in particular – bringing a couple of fine saves from the New England Revolution stopper.
Mexico continued to dominate in terms of possession and territory after the break, but the Americans held firm to force the game into extra time.
It looked inevitable that a penalty shootout would be required until Miles Robinson latched onto a Kellyn Acosta free-kick to head home from close range with just three minutes left on the clock.
The victory sees the Stars and Stripes add the Gold Cup to the Concacaf Nations League they picked up with another win over El Tri in Denver in June.
