Darwin Nunez’s Struggles at Liverpool: Lynch Shares Concerns on Media Matters Podcast

In Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, the spotlight was once again on Darwin Nunez as Arne Slot opted against using the forward. In a recent episode of the Media Matters podcast on Anfield Index, David Lynch offered his candid take on Nunez’s ongoing struggles and future at Liverpool. Lynch’s comments reflect a growing uncertainty around Nunez’s ability to consistently deliver under new manager Arne Slot, raising questions about his long-term role at the club.

Nunez’s Struggles with Consistency

Lynch pointed out that Nunez has shown flashes of brilliance but has yet to establish himself as a reliable option in Liverpool’s attack. Lynch remarked, “I’ve watched Darwin Nunez now for two seasons… I just don’t see it.” He highlighted Nunez’s tendency to perform well in some games but disappear in others, underscoring the challenge of building a cohesive attack around him. Lynch noted that while Nunez has the physical attributes to be a threat, his inconsistency in finishing and link-up play remains a significant concern.

In his most recent performance, Nunez was active in the final third but struggled to make a tangible impact. Lynch observed, “The finishing just went off,” and emphasised that a team with Liverpool’s ambitions needs a more reliable striker. Lynch suggested that Nunez’s erratic performances, which range from exceptional to underwhelming, make it difficult for Liverpool to depend on him consistently.

A Lack of Technical Precision

One of Lynch’s main criticisms was Nunez’s lack of technical precision, particularly in build-up play. “It’s the four out of 12 passes completed… that’s just miles off it,” Lynch stated, referencing Nunez’s performance in recent matches. He argued that, despite the striker’s natural athleticism and ability to press, he often fails to complete simple passes or maintain possession, disrupting Liverpool’s attacking rhythm.

Lynch acknowledged that Nunez’s work ethic and physical presence add a unique dynamic to Liverpool’s forward line but stressed that these qualities alone are not enough. “You need a centre forward who’s going to be consistent and good in build-up,” Lynch said, adding that Liverpool needs a striker who can contribute effectively to the team’s possession-based style under Slot.

Nunez’s finishing has also been under scrutiny, with Lynch observing that he misses too many big chances. “He misses big chances and doesn’t give you enough goals,” he stated, noting that Liverpool’s success hinges on having a striker who can convert opportunities regularly. Lynch suggested that this inconsistency may ultimately limit Nunez’s long-term prospects at Liverpool, where precise finishing is crucial.

Nunez in Slot’s System: A Mismatch?

Lynch raised an important question about whether Nunez is suited to Arne Slot’s tactical approach, which places a premium on technical ability and composure in possession. Lynch commented, “Slot needs a striker who can keep it going… Nunez’s build-up is a level below.” He explained that while Nunez’s speed and physicality are assets, they may not align with Slot’s emphasis on calm, calculated build-up play.

Lynch speculated that Nunez might have been better suited to Jurgen Klopp’s style, which relied on directness and high-intensity pressing. Under Slot, however, the focus on maintaining possession and constructing controlled attacks could expose Nunez’s limitations. Lynch mentioned that even though Nunez offers pace, “He might just bounce off it, or he might not control it,” which detracts from Slot’s overall game plan.

Nunez’s Liverpool Future

Lynch’s comments reflect a growing sentiment that Nunez’s role at Liverpool may be in question, particularly if his performances fail to improve. “This is a massive season for him now… he has to put it together,” Lynch remarked, acknowledging that Nunez’s third season at the club is critical for establishing himself as a consistent performer. Lynch hinted that if Nunez’s inconsistency persists, Liverpool may consider their options at the end of the season, especially with transfer funds potentially available for a more compatible striker.

Despite the criticisms, Lynch expressed a hope that Nunez could turn things around, saying, “I’d love him to go on a crazy run and show everyone that he can be that player.” However, Lynch’s assessment remains sceptical, as he believes that Nunez may ultimately fall short of the standard Liverpool needs to compete at the highest level.

As the season progresses, Nunez’s ability to adapt to Slot’s tactical demands and improve his consistency will be crucial in determining his future at the club. Liverpool fans, meanwhile, will be watching closely, hoping that Nunez can live up to the promise he showed upon his arrival.
