Milan start process for Under-23 team in Serie C

Milan have reportedly filed the first paperwork to set up their own Under-23 team in Serie C, joining Juventus and Atalanta in this process.

Since the rules were changed in Italy to allow essentially reserve teams to play in the third tier in 2018, Juve were for some time the only club willing to take this route.

Atalanta joined them in the 2023-24 campaign and we could see Milan enter from next season too.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Milan have already filed the necessary paperwork to begin the process of registering their reserve team for the Lega Pro (another name for Serie C).

They are not alone, as Fiorentina and Sassuolo are also working on the prospects of setting up this team, while Torino are looking at it further along in the future.

These reserve teams allow the younger players to flourish from the academy and play competitive football against older opponents, rather than as part of the Primavera youth league.

They can also ‘poach’ players from these squads for the senior team, as Juventus did many times with the Next Gen side.
