Milan finished their journey in the Champions League knockout stages after drawing 1-1 at home against Feyenoord tonight. The Italian giants slumped to a disheartening 1-0 defeat in Rotterdam last week but atoned with an electrifying first-half performance tonight.

However, everything fell apart in the second 45 minutes.

Former Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez fired Milan to a dream start. The Mexican striker headed home Malick Thiaw’s cutback to draw the Rossoneri level on aggregate. Despite dominating possession and unleashing ten more shots, Sergio Conceicao’s side couldn’t find the net again before halftime.

When it looked like Milan had Feyenoord on the ropes, Theo Hernandez offered the Dutch side a lifeline. He received two silly yellow cards, reducing his team to ten men with almost the entire half left. The visitors took advantage of the Frenchman’s expulsion as Julian Carranza leveled the score with a close-range header.

Down to ten men, Milan failed to recover. As a result, they’re out of Europe sooner than expected.

Milan (4-2-3-1)

Mike Maignan – 5.5

A bystander in the first half, the French goalkeeper didn’t have to make a single stop before the break. Though he conceded from the only shot on target, there was nothing he could do.

Kyle Walker – 7

Though he rarely opted for a cross, the Englishman was omnipresent in the front third, constantly offering depth on the flank. Forced a diving save from the Feyenoord goalkeeper with a low thunderbolt. Impregnable in defense!

Malick Thiaw – 7

Despite some misreads, the young center-back had a great game. Thiaw’s composure on the ball was commendable, while his diagonal boss frequently found their targets.

Strahinja Pavlovic – 7.5

His transformation under Conceicao is remarkable. The Serb was outstanding, winning virtually every one-on-one duel against Feyenoord forwards.

Theo Hernandez – 2

A moment of a complete blackout, which earned him a yellow card for a cynical foul, tainted the left-back’s otherwise solid performance. Unlucky to hit the post with a thunderous half-volley. But there’s no explanation for the second booking!

Yunus Musah – 6.5

If he can improve his decision-making, the USMNT midfielder could become the next big thing at the San Siro. His athleticism and ball control stood out.

Tijjani Reijnders – 6

A bit lackadaisical at times, the Dutchman surrendered possession cheaply early on. However, he grew into the contest and pulled all the strings in the midfield.

Rafael Leao – 6.5

He enjoyed his game tonight, making light work of Givairo Read with trademark tricks and flicks. However, he should’ve scored late in the first half.

Joao Felix – 6.5

Timon Wellenreuther thwarted his two first-half shots, while Leao’s miss denied him a spectacular assist. That crossfield pass was superb!

Christian Pulisic – 6

Though Milan attacked more on the left, the ex-Chelsea winger had two moments of brilliance in the opening 45 minutes. It’s a shame Felix and Gimenez couldn’t profit.

Santiago Gimenez – 7

As long as the goals keep coming, no Milan fan can complain. Proved his poacher’s instincts with a clinical early header to put things back to square one. Taken off after Hernandez’s expulsion.
