Milan Futuro closed their first Serie C season with a draw against Vis Pesaro, and now a play-off awaits to determine if they are relegated.
Going into Sunday’s game, Massimo Oddo’s side knew that a win would secure being at home for the second leg against SPAL in the play-off to see who goes down to the fourth tier, but ultimately they would have to settle for a draw that came late thanks to Alesi’s goal.
Given SPAL’s victory against Gubbio, the Futuro were overtaken by the team from Ferrara in the standings. They are therefore forced to play the first leg (on May 10) of the relegation play-off at home and the return leg (on May 17) away.
It was another bitter note in what has been a very difficult debut campaign, but the precedents against SPAL offer some hope: Milan beat them 2-1 at home back in September, and 2-1 away in February.
However, Francesco Camarda and Alex Jimenez will not be able to take part. The rules, in fact, state that only players who have reached 25 appearances in the regular season can play in these matches.
The Italian striker and the Spanish full-back have 17 and 15 appearances respectively, having often been called up to the first team and with Jimenez now being an established starter.
